ECFC Social Event and Picnic – A Smash Hit!

On Sunday evening, August 26th, a solid turnout of players, coaches and parents enjoyed the ECFC season kick-off social event at Meridian playfield in Wallingford. Many of the attendees had come from their teams’ tournaments earlier in the weekend to participate in the festivities. The evening included a fine selection of potluck dinner items, jovial socializing, and games that were capped off with a fun (and ultimately sloppy!) round of “Egg Toss” as shown in the photo.

Many thanks to Simon Kahan (Claire, F96) for organizing the event. The board has set a goal of holding social events such as this one to help foster the community aspect of our club. Keep an eye out for the next event – it’s sure to be a blast. (Article by Dan Barsher)

2012 ECFC Summer Residential Camp

The third annual Emerald City FC residence camp was held August 12-18, 2012 at Misty Acres near Shelton, Washington. This year’s theme for both the boys’ and girls’ camps was “Accept the Challenge”, a strategy focused on accepting unexpected challenges on and off the field. Activities centered primarily on soccer and included 8 field training sessions per camp, plus other confidence and team building exercises, such as ropes course challenges. Evening campfires were also included. In addition, the boys’ camp included improvisational exercises and skits, and the girls’ camp included a mental skills workshop.

This year’s camp attracted 37 players from 7 Emerald City teams, plus one international player from Shenzhen, China. ECFC alumni donated a club jersey and scarf for him.

The camp yielded a number of huge successes. Besides the tremendous skill development of all the players on the field, one of the most notable of those successes was exhibited by one of our girls’ teams in the areas of leadership, communication, and team building. The players initiated a special team meeting to set goals and discuss a variety of methods that they can improve as individuals and as a team. That kind of initiative bodes very well for those girls, their team, and our club.

A special thank you to all of the coaches who helped make this year’s sessions successful: Jon Matsushita, Matthew Olson, Erik Oman, David Smith, and Jesse Winship-Freyer. (Article by Ruth Nicholson – Residential Camp Organizer)

Emerald City FC M95 White Finalists at 2012 Federal Way Blast Off

Congratulations to ECFC M95 White and Coach Jesse Winship-Freyer for reaching the finals of the Federal Way Blast Off. The team was short of a few players due to injury and Coach Jesse pulled up 4 players from M97 Green and a couple of players from M95 Green to join the squad for the weekend. The team won all their group games and topped the group with 28 points. The finals was a rematch against RV Slammers Orange. It was a close game with M95 White scoring first. The Slammers took their chances despite M95 White having the majority of the possession and shots on goal, the final score was 2-1. Well done to Federal Way FC for a well run tournament.
