ECFC 2013 Futsal Development Program

Sign up begins 12/4

Futsal is played throughout the world (including the US), and in some countries like Brazil, it is just as popular as outdoor soccer. Futsal is NOT indoor soccer. Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced game where players are challenged to use their ball skills and creativity. It is played on a basketball court with players wearing rubber soled shoes. Most of the best soccer nations in the world use Futsal to develop their players. In fact, many of the world’s all-time greatest soccer players, including Robinho, Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldinho, Maradona, and Pele started as youth players playing Futsal. ECFC Social Event and Picnic – A Smash Hit!

On Sunday evening, August 26th, a solid turnout of players, coaches and parents enjoyed the ECFC season kick-off social event at Meridian playfield in Wallingford. Many of the attendees had come from their teams’ tournaments earlier in the weekend to participate in the festivities. The evening included a fine selection of potluck dinner items, jovial socializing, and games that were capped off with a fun (and ultimately sloppy!) round of “Egg Toss” as shown in the photo.

Many thanks to Simon Kahan (Claire, F96) for organizing the event. The board has set a goal of holding social events such as this one to help foster the community aspect of our club. Keep an eye out for the next event – it’s sure to be a blast. (Article by Dan Barsher)

2012 ECFC Summer Residential Camp

The third annual Emerald City FC residence camp was held August 12-18, 2012 at Misty Acres near Shelton, Washington. This year’s theme for both the boys’ and girls’ camps was “Accept the Challenge”, a strategy focused on accepting unexpected challenges on and off the field. Activities centered primarily on soccer and included 8 field training sessions per camp, plus other confidence and team building exercises, such as ropes course challenges. Evening campfires were also included. In addition, the boys’ camp included improvisational exercises and skits, and the girls’ camp included a mental skills workshop.

This year’s camp attracted 37 players from 7 Emerald City teams, plus one international player from Shenzhen, China. ECFC alumni donated a club jersey and scarf for him.

The camp yielded a number of huge successes. Besides the tremendous skill development of all the players on the field, one of the most notable of those successes was exhibited by one of our girls’ teams in the areas of leadership, communication, and team building. The players initiated a special team meeting to set goals and discuss a variety of methods that they can improve as individuals and as a team. That kind of initiative bodes very well for those girls, their team, and our club.

A special thank you to all of the coaches who helped make this year’s sessions successful: Jon Matsushita, Matthew Olson, Erik Oman, David Smith, and Jesse Winship-Freyer. (Article by Ruth Nicholson – Residential Camp Organizer)

ECFC M95 Green semi finalists at the 2012 Nike Crossfire Challenge

Congratulations to ECFC M95 Green, coached by Bobby Howe, for making it to the semi finals of the 2012 Nike Crossfire Challenge. For the tournament Coach Bobby Howe added 2 players from M95 White, coached by Jesse Winship-Freyer, to round out the roster due to injury and vacation. In true Emerald City FC style all the players pulled together and battled the whole weekend.
M95 Green fought their way out of division play making it to the quarter finals against the Crossfire 95 A team, coached by Mark Collings. ECFC M95 scored 2 quick goals in the first 5 minutes and dominated throughout the game with a final emphatic score of 3-1.
In the semis, M95 Green, met a very strong WPFC 95 Black team. After regulation time both teams were at a stalemate, with the score tied at 1-1.  Nail biting penalties then ensued. Unfortunately M95 Green fell to WPFC Black 3-4 in a close penalty shoot out.

Follow M99 Green Blogging from Spain

Follow Coach Matthew Olson, Coach Alex Jessup and M99 parents as they document M99 Green's soccer adventure in Spain

Congratulations ECFC M99 Green, semi finalists of the Copa Catalunya

Eli Holmes: Here's the link to the tournament website results and schedule http://eurosportring.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=2B0EF6D7-8A8C-4EC1-A855-B295537EE8E6&draw=9

Coach Alex Jessup: Our team finished in 4th place. Really good job especially considering they were playing older and much bigger teams than us. Last night in Barça before I head off to Milan in the morning (July 5)

Coach Matthew Olson: After 4 days of play in the Spain Copa Catalunya soccer tourney, we have made it to the semi-finals vs an very tall, mature looking Italian team....off to the field. Near Santa Susana, Catalonia (July 5)

Miron Washington: ECFC advances to semi-final. With 2-1 over USA Wa, Dc. Semi final match on Fri. against formidable undefeated team from Italy. Go ECFC!  Near Palafolls, Catalonia (July 4)

Marion Washington: Tourny Day 3. A fierce battle against team Italy started today. Despite super suspect referee'ng, which, included 4 ECFC yellow cards, the boys prevailed- 1-0. Advancing to qtr finals as the #2 team from A bracket. Fittingly, on the 4th, we play another USA team from Washington DC. Qtr final match in 30min.

Miron Washington: Photos from tourny day 2. 1st game was loss to Poland 3-2. We were fleet of foot, but, gave up 3-5" per player! Game 2. Dominated 5-0 win against Italy. 3rd place team in bracket. Go ECFC! Near Palafolls, Catalonia  (July 3)
Coach Matthew: Played a team from France today...down 0-1 at half and ran out of legs to lose 0-3. We actually outplayed our opponent but soccer can be tough like that... 80's temp with warmups on a side gravel parking lot due to rains and wet field... Alas, 90's and radiant Mediterranean sun expected tomorrow with 9:30 and 11:30 am double header.... (July 2)

Miron Washington: Game Day 1. 3-0 loss to team from Italy. Boys had several shots on goal, and great saves to stay in the mix. (July 2)
Coach Matthew: Kids going crazy while watching the 10:30 pm Euro Cup final!! Barca is subdued with minimal outward celebration being the 'Texas' of Spain/anti-Madrid gov, however, fireworks going off all around and our players joining in by running up and down the sidewalks outside our restaurant after each of the 4 Spain goals over Italy.
Santa Susana, Catalonia (July 1)

Miron Washington: Amazing day for ECFC B99 here in Barcelona. From Camp Nou experience, to checking out Gaudi art on Las Rambles, practicing in the rain, and watching Spain go to work. They're ready to bring it! Go ECFC! (July 1)

Coach Matthew: Trip into Barcelona for the Camp Nou stadium tour... (July 1)http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Santa-Susana-Cataluna-Spain/106377962728145

Coach Matthew: Managed to stay up 30 hours with players and parents after landing at 9:30 am into Barcelona airport. We are staying an hour north of the city. Played beach soccer and swam in the Med Sea before dinner. Hot and humid.... (June 30)

Coach Alex: The intrepid Emerald City FC M99 Green team is preparing to depart for Barcelona to compete in the Copa Catalunya! — at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac). (June 28)

Coach Matthew: Less than 48 hours before the Emerald City FC BU13 '99 team heads to Spain to play in the Copa Catalunya Tournament in Barcelona...stay tuned for future blogs. (June 27, Seattle,WA)
